ISO/TS16949: 2002 will replace QS9000 in 2006 (2004 for Chrysler suppliers). TS16949 is the new international automotive standard (first released in 1999), and is aligned with ISO 9001: 2000. This standard emphasizes the same requirements as ISO 9001:2000, as well as the international automotive system requirements. The process for registration to this Standard is very stringent. The IAOB is qualifying registrars very carefully, and monitoring the registration process closely, believing that many companies issued QS9000 certificates should not have received them. Also, third tier suppliers to TS16949 companies will be required to be ISO 9001: 2000 certified.
Because automakers handle such a volume of parts from so many suppliers, they need to be sure suppliers are truly adhering to quality standards. TS16949 emphasizes customer satisfaction and customer inputs while linking several previously unlinked aspects of product design and manufacturing. This standard is aligned with MQI's philosophy to define requirements first to save time and money.
